Google’s “Follow Your World” Gets Shut down Next Month. Here’s Why

You have probably never heard of this, but Google announced that they are shutting down another app today. This one is called “Follow Your World,” and it was launched many years ago. It was supposed to track new satellite imagery in Maps.

The app was pretty simple in its nature. Every time Google updates the satellite imagery for the places that you selected in the app, you would get a notification that let you know about the new imagery.

Here’s the description of the app

Explore a map of new 3D coverage in Google Earth. They also talked about a new map of new 2D coverage. For periodic imagery updates, you need to subscribe to Earth on Medium. They also need your feedback via the Earth App, App Store, and Google Play. They want to know where you’d like to see an imagery refresh, with a screenshot centered on your area of interest. They use the feedback in order to inform where they need to refresh the imagery in the future.

So why is the app going away?

According to Google, it has been the only tool to help them see what’s new. But ever since then, they have developed new ways for you to stay informed and new ways for you to tell them how you’d like to see this new imagery.

When will it be gone forever?

The app will disappear for good on the 30th of September 2019. Up until then, the company is offering the chance for users to download all of their points of interest as a KML file.
