Prime Video’s Android TV version has now got a new update on the Google Play Store, but people were left a bit confused. The reason for this confusion is the fact that it is not clear if this is the version that makes the app accessible on Android TV devices.
At the beginning of the week, both Amazon and Google announced they were increasing support of YouTube and Prime Video on their platforms. This meant that Prime Video would not be limited to a few companies Amazon had initially had agreements with anymore.
When the confirmation was made, it was assumed that the support would roll out immediately even though that does not seem to happen. More so if we consider that the Google Play Store listing for Prime Video has not been changed since July the 4th.
The ‘What’s New’ category of the app listing doesn’t detail either a more comprehensive Android TV device support even though it does enhance the Android TV functionality of the service. The only other optimizations to the app are the ability to use a number pad to bypass parental controls and acquire restrictions, also the more general enhanced playback performance.
The most recent version of the app, 4.12.10, still seems to be accessible on certain Android TV devices, and the new features implemented will only appear on those devices.
When the initial announcement was released, it was a kind of shared report as the support for Prime Video was also being expanded to Chromecast. That support appears to have now rolled out for many people with the mobile version of the app. They have also gotten an update this week which added the Cast support. Even so, this is quite different from the promised wider Android TV support, which is still expected to appear.
Google is clearly indicating the app version of Prime Video in the statement. The version is accessible on ‘select Android TV devices,’ and also through download.
